Social media in Pakistan : catalyst for communication , not change

Social media is digital content and interaction that is created by and between people . Social and political activism has had very significant episodes throughout the twentieth century and use of social media tools as a mean to raise awareness and mobilize the masses against the status quo of a county. Social media has allowed citizens to be a part of social networking to engage in a public sphere that was unreachable earlier . It served as an influential factor in accelerating the Arab Spring . Social Media have a key role in echoing public opinion . Access to conversation is far more important than access to information . According to ‘Time’ Magazine , one-third of middle east population having no clear future prospects have utilized ‘Online Citizenry’ to rally the populace to their cause .

The internet allows large masses to solidify their efforts to protests in a short time. It provides a platform for people to express their solidarity , within their respective countries as well as others in the region and beyond . Social Media has an effective role in galvanizing the youth and empowering them in their plight for freedom and independence . At such moments it facilitates social interactions , information sharing with quick feedback .

It raises the potential for developing a more “direct” form of participative democracy , with public voices joining in ‘real world’ and online socio-political activism . Its speed and interactivity unites protesters and provide the means for disseminating important safety information as a security outlet during the revolution. Social media introduced speed and interactivity that were lacking in the traditional mobilization techniques. It plays fundamental role for the mobilization of collective actions to trigger and implement of social movements worldwide. It support cyber activism to change the landscape of collective action.

Social media promotes a sense of community and collective identity among marginalized group members, creating less-confined political spaces , establishing connections with other social movements , and publicizing causes to gain support from the global community. Social media provide an important additional source for social movements implemented by “resource poor” actors , offering means for mass communication that was previously restricted financial , temporal or spatial constraints such as online HIV/AIDS activism and activites of some Muslim feminists. The ‘Leaderless’ revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt were mostly social media propelled. Facebook , Twitter and telecommunication technology permitted for extensive political sign against government corruption both ‘on and offline’. Their voices for change were echoed round the globe , gaining such agreeable support internationally.

Pakistan’s social media supports the stories that are disregarded by traditional newspapers ; mobilize data dissemination about protests and other social crusades to promote humanitarian efforts. It addresses our emerging social problems with public participation.

The stereotype of widowhood is a lonely, isolated woman living without much stimulation or activity in life. I was accused of causing my husband’s death and was often abused by my in-laws. I was ostracized from society, and discriminated financially and psychologically by the community, I live in. I was an independent, educated woman but I was deprived of all my social rights, along with my husband. I faced a condition of extreme distress. To use a local metaphor, being a widow, I felt as the protective “chaddar” from my head had been removed and the status of dependence has been thrust upon me.

I started feeling different because wherever I went people either gave me sympathetic look or they get scared that I will bring bad luck to them. But for the first time I felt betrayed at the wedding ceremony of one of my sisters. I was treated like an outcast by my own family. All of them thought that if I will touch the bridal clothes or anything related to the nuptial ceremony, some catastrophe could happen. At every moment people’s behavior made me feel like I was the reason for the death of my husband and I was left to live with the guilt. I failed to understand that why people do not realize that life and death is in the hands of Almighty and we play no role in such decisions whatsoever, if I had it my way I would have died before him. Lack of adequate expertise did not permit me to run any type of earning activity independently. Such situation led me to rely on others even for the fulfillment of basic needs like food, shelter, health and others required for myself and my dependent children. Alternatively, having no earning partner to support me in the domestic unit I have to bear a double burden of an earner and manager of the household unit. Widowhood as a social misfortune imposed many conducts related to dress, color, behavior and others. My life underwent total metamorphosis after I became a widow. In our society, there is no dress code for married men whose wives are alive or who are widowers. But at the same time, this is not very true for women. I was considered ill- fated and habitually addressed in very insulting way or manner. My position even within my family also remains subjugated regularly. I was prohibited from being present in any type of religious or social ceremonies. My presence in such ceremonies was considered inauspicious..

Although widow looks like powerless in public, I was found to be involved in special works and services in order to manage and fulfill my every day needs. The fear of any kind of sexual harassment that I might face in new social setting motivates me to stick in activities I was performing rather than looking for alternative opportunities of emerging social environment.

Whatever the cause of my husband’s death was, most of the people blamed me for it. I was supposed to bring the ill-fortunes in my family. My hard works, skills, dedication to the family was counted only as long as my husband was alive. The neglected and hated status of the widow is not the recent one. It is deep-rooted in our patriarchal structure. The society is very biased towards the widow’s freedom and their life. Thus, it makes me feel inferior in all fields of society. I feel that unawareness and illiteracy are the foremost fundamental issues of concern of widow. Though being victim of socio-cultural evils and customary practices, I was not aware of my rights and inferior status. Affected by the unfair type of patriarchal social philosophy and structure, I feel it as my fate and not the social prejudice. I always perceive myself as a miserable and unfortunate figure because of strong stigmas associated with my personality. Such stigmas and prejudices make me hopeless and a marginalized person of society, who even can never for see a bright future of her children.

The way society regards the widow depends on the nature, culture and ethics of that society and how much its members are aware of the teachings of Islam. It also depends on the experiences of families in that society, like having a widowed mother or sister; such experiences would make them able to judge the woman soundly. The media has oppressed the widow. It represents the widow as an immoral woman. They should present the role that a widow is supposed to play to become an example for others because the media substantially contributes to forming values, attitudes and trends pertaining to the widow’s marriage or her struggle to avoid distorting her honorable image.

It took two days longer than expected, but Justin Bieber succeeded Tuesday in overtaking fellow pop idol Lady Gaga as the most followed person on Twitter.

“After putting up a great fight (which took longer than we expected), Justin Bieber took Lady Gaga’s crown this early morning,” Twitter Counter, which tracks and monitors Twitter usage, reported on its blog.

By mid-day, the Biebs had 33,342,299 followers, against 33,333,682 for the Mother Monster, followed by Katy Perry, Rihanna and, a day after his public second-term inauguration, President Barack Obama with 26,183,711 followers.

Last week Twitter Counter had forecasted that, according to its algorithms, Bieber would clinch first place last Sunday.

Bieber and Lady Gaga — who had led the Twitter pack since 2010 when she outpaced Britney Spears for the top spot — are currently on tour in the United States.

“So proud of @justinbieber and all the Beliebers!” Lady Gaga graciously tweeted her Canadian-born rival last week. “I’m only happy to see your fans growing in size, you all deserve it! Monsters support you!”
