Apple opened its biggest Asian store yet in Beijing Today, with hordes of shoppers descending on the three-floor complex that highlights the growing importance of China to the US tech giant.

The shop, on the major shopping street of Wangfujing in the heart of the capital, covers an area of 2,300 square metres (24,750 square feet), according to Chinese media reports.

China is now the second-biggest market for Apple after the United States but the company has also faced frequent criticism for the conditions in which its products are produced in China.

The enthusiasm for the company’s gadgets among the country’s fast-growing consumer class was clear Saturday as shoppers quickly packed out the new shop shortly after it opened at 9:00 am (0100 GMT).

The latest criticism to hit a company linked to Apple came earlier this week when Taiwan’s Foxconn, which makes products for the US tech giant, admitted employing children as young as 14 on assembly lines at a plant in China.

SEOUL: South Korea’s Samsung Electronics said it was considering adding Apple’s new iPhone 5 to a patent infringement case as part of a long-running global legal battle between the rival smartphone giants.

Samsung officials said the company would look into amending its side of an ongoing patent lawsuit in a US court to include the latest Apple gadget, which went on sale across Asia Friday and is due to hit US stores later in the day.

“Our company considers adding Apple’s iPhone 5 to the (patent infringement) case but we cannot say when,” a Samsung spokesman told.

“Our decision will be made after our company has analysed the iPhone 5 to see what aspects of its device constitutes patent infringement.”

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted market watchers as saying Samsung may use its long-term evolution (LTE) patent portfolio to attack the iPhone 5 — the first Apple phone to use the fourth-generation telecom network.

Samsung and Apple — respectively the world’s number one and two smartphone makers — have been at loggerheads over dozens of patent lawsuits in 10 nations, accusing each other of copying technologies and designs.

Last month, a California court ordered Samsung to pay $1.05 billion for patent infringement. The South Korean firm has appealed the decision.

Samsung, in a statement late Thursday, accused Apple of continuing to take “aggressive legal measures that will limit market competition”.

It added: “Under these circumstances, we have little choice but to take the steps necessary to protect our innovations and intellectual property rights.”

Apple becomes the focus of the technology universe Wednesday as the world awaits a new iPhone with a big, beautiful touchscreen and connectivity to blazingly fast telecom networks.

Canaccord Genuity brokerage told investors to expect record iPhone sales after a new model launches, and Piper Jaffray predicted that as many as 10 million could be bought during the week after launch.

“Pent-up demand for the iPhone 5 is such that Apple will sell every one they can make” in the coming weeks, said analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group.

Enderle said he expected the iPhone 5 to dominate until next year, when “fan demand” could give way to device-neutral shoppers saving money by opting for Android-powered rivals from firms like Samsung.

“Samsung has gone beyond copying iPhone to improving on it,” Enderle said.

Smartphones powered by Google’s Android software continued to dominate with 52.2 percent of the US market, but Apple’s iOS was the second most popular smartphone platform with 33.4 percent, comScore reported.

Samsung mobile phones remained the most popular in the United States with 25.6 percent of the market, but third-place Apple gained ground to claim 16.3 percent as of the end of July, according to comScore.

Facebook Inc is weeding out fake “Likes” on its social network that are being caused by spammers, malware and black marketeers as it strives to maintain credibility as an advertising platform.

Facebook said the number of Likes, or endorsements by users, on corporate pages is likely to drop by less than 1 percent, on average, after the crackdown.

“Newly improved automated efforts will remove those Likes gained by malware, compromised accounts, deceived users, or purchased bulk Likes,” Facebook said in a post on its official blog on Friday.

“While we have always had dedicated protections against each of these threats on Facebook, these improved systems have been specifically configured to identify and take action against suspicious Likes,” the post continued.

Thanks to a growing black market, companies can instantly raise their profile on Facebook by purchasing thousands of Likes at a time – a practice that is forbidden by the No. 1 social network, which has 955 million users.

Many of these Likes come from bogus Facebook user accounts rather than genuine users of the social network.

Meanwhile, various spam-like programs on Facebook deceive users into unwittingly liking something when they perform another action, such as clicking to watch a video.

Facebook said the cleanup will benefit both users and companies that maintain pages on the network, by giving a more accurate measurement of fan count and demographics.

Ensuring the integrity of Likes is serious business for Facebook, which depends on advertising revenue from large brands and other businesses. Many of the ad campaigns that companies conduct on Facebook are designed to garner Likes – a sign that their marketing message has resonated with consumers.

“It’s their currency,” said Jeremiah Owyang, a partner at research firm Altimeter Group. “Facebook is playing the Federal Reserve, to take the counterfeit currency off the market to ensure that there’s quality in the marketplace.”

The problem is not unique to Facebook, say analysts, who note that Twitter and Google Inc also grapple with fake accounts, spam and other techniques to game the service.

But for Facebook, the pressure to show that activity on its social network is genuine has grown as concerns have mounted on Wall Street about the company’s long-term profit potential.

Shares of Facebook set a new low on Friday, falling as much as 5.3 percent to $18.08, after brokerages cut their price targets on the stock. Facebook has lost more than 50 percent of its market value since its initial public offering in May.

Facebook estimates that 1.5 percent of its users are “undesirable” accounts set up for purposes that violate its terms of service, according to its most recent 10-Q regulatory filing.

“I think what they’re intending to do is get a handle on it before it gets really out of control,” Brian Blau, an analyst with research firm Gartner, said.
